Quick Guide to CBD Oil and Its Benefits

CBD oil became the buzzword in the world of health improvement(1). With so much information out there, it’s easy to get confused about what CBD oil actually is. In this quick article, we’ll break it down and give you everything you need to know about CBD and answer some of the most frequently asked questions(2).

What is CBD oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which can be found in the Cannabis sativa plant, commonly referred to as hemp. It’s been known for its medicinal purposes for centuries, frequently used in Asia. Its usage was documented in plenty of civilizations, including Vikings and medieval Germans.

Can I get high with CBD?

It’s important to note the difference between CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (known as THC)(3). While they can both be derived from the same plant, their functions are completely different.

The human body features two types of cannabinoid receptors – CB1 and CB2(4). CB1 can be found in the brain and central nervous system and CB2 lives in the immune system. THC is known for its psychoactive effects(5), however, CBD is primarily associated with the CB2 receptors(6).

While CBD does have calming effects on the body, it doesn’t give you the effect of being high like THC does.

The benefits and potential dangers of CBD oil

Studies that were done on the effects of CBD point to its countless benefits, including pain and anxiety relief, combating sleep disorders, managing headaches and migraines, aiding with skin disorders, clearing digestive issues, and more.

Despite its effectiveness, it’s important to note that CBD oil doesn’t pose any dangers when it comes to addictions. World Health Organization(6) states that it exhibits no abuse and dependence potential. With that in mind, it’s important to stick to the recommended daily dose of CBD in order to receive the best possible long term benefits of this miracle cannabinoid.

If you’re unsure whether CBD oil is right for you and your concerns, make sure you consult your doctor to develop the right plan. It’s important to note that while CBD shows promising signs of lessening the effects of anxiety and depression, the oil itself may not be enough for a successful treatment.
