The entire world has felt the devastating effects of the coronavirus epidemic. From health issues to losing work, many people have found themselves on its receiving end. Now, one study shows CBD has enough power to take down this virus.
A Groundbreaking Study
Since 2015, University of Lethbridge researchers Olga and Igor Kovalchuk have been working closely with cannabis. One day, the two decided to take a closer look at sativa lines(1) and their possible impact on the coronavirus. After re-opening some old data, their research determined CBD is a likely combatant against the epidemic. “The extracts of our most successful and novel high CBD C.(2) sativa lines, pending further investigation, may become a useful and safe addition to the treatment of COVID-19 as an adjunct therapy. They can be used to develop easy-to-use preventative treatments in the form of mouthwash and throat gargle products for both clinical and at-home use,” the study said. “Such products ought to be tested for their potential to decrease viral entry via the oral mucosa. Given the current dire and rapidly evolving epidemiological situation, every possible therapeutic opportunity and avenue must be considered.”
Olga Kovalchuk hopes to work on clinical trials to test its legitimacy. “Given the current dire and rapidly developing epidemiological situation, every possible therapeutic opportunity and avenue needs to be considered. We need to bring it to the people,” Olga told CTV News.(3) “We need to fight the beast.”
A Failed Attempt At Research
Israeli canna-tech company Stero Therapeutics(4) attempted to seek if CBD could thwart the coronavirus. When the coronavirus peaked in April, the company had plans to run a clinic at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva. Unfortunately, the hospital shut its doors after it became overcrowded. The company decided to relocate these clinics to Europe,(5) which has seen a decline in cases since April. Overall, Europe has seen nearly three million cases of coronavirus with 190,041 confirmed deaths. Stero Therapeutics also wants to help strengthen the use of steroids(6) for coronavirus patients. Through steroids, many patients have dealt with a cytokine storm(7), which inflames the organs.
Too Quick At Work?
While the Kovalchuks and Stero Therapeutics have their agenda, there’s the issue of possibly not taking their time. Many researchers have varying responses on when a proper vaccine(8)will become available. Even with a proper vaccine, testing it out can be the hardest part. Researchers are against the World Health Organization’s belief that a 50% effective vaccine would be ideal. The WHO isn’t alone with this mindset; the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also believes this is proper protocol. Anthony Fauci believes a 75% effective vaccine is perfect for mass consumption.
With vaccines, many people unfamiliar with the procedure are paying close attention. It’s up to researchers to keep everyone informed about every single update
“We have to do our utmost to educate the public about how vaccines are tested and the safety profiles of vaccines and what they can actually do, and how they can prevent disease in a community,” Matthew Laurens told National Geographic.(9)
While many pro-CBD people will gladly take a CBD-based vaccine, any vaccine will do at this point.
